Home of a planetarium, interactive museum, and performing arts center, the 240,000-square-foot Clay Center offers a stunningly diverse and entertaining array of entertainment and educational opportunities. From the exhibits of the Avampato Discovery Museum to the trumpets of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, this architectural gem surprises at every turn.

The Clay Center

The Clay Center holds monthly Lunchtime Lectures for interested parties. This free monthly lecture series hosts different presenters, sparking public discourse on a wide variety of topics. Programs usually last between 40 and 45 minutes.

The center’s adult book

The center’s adult book club focuses on art. The first week features an art lecture. Two weeks later, the club will discuss the reading. The cost is $12 for members and $15 for non-members. Call 304-561-3553 to register. Fee includes both sessions per month. The book must be purchased separately.

  • The Clay Center has a large number of outdoor sculptures. Additionally, The Avampato Discovery Museum’s permanent collection consists of more than 800 pieces of art, including Phil II, a portrait created by famous artist Chuck Close.
  • The paper pieces in the permanent collection continue to draw a crowd, as well as the outdoor sculptures. The center offers a number of free programs and events based on the exhibits. These tend to draw a lot of interest.
