After three stages of development, The West Virginia state Capitol was dedicated on the state's 69th birthday on June 20, 1932. Known for its 23.5 karat gold dome, the WV Capitol building is the tallest structure in the state. The building's grounds include the Governor's Mansion, the Culture Center, and the Veterans Memorial statue.

In 1877
In 1877, Charleston was chosen as the site for the state capital. Eight years later, the first building was erected and opened, but burned down in 1921. A subsequent replacement also burned to the ground. A Capitol Building Commission authorized the construction of the current capitol building, which was designed by architect Cass Gilbert. and It was dedicated on June 20th, 1932.

Yes, tours of the state Capitol building are conducted from Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every half hour, and on Saturdays from 1pm to 3:30 pm on the hour. No guided tours are given on Sundays
An interior look of the dome is a must. Inside, you will find a two ton crystal chandelier, which hangs 180-feet from the floor. The main unit has 333 rooms and two wings. Visitors are taken back by the beauty of the rotunda and the intersections at the two wings. The tours will take you through the most memorable areas of the building.
